This work deals with the background of Machiavellism in 16th-century Europe. The focal point is Niccolo Machiavelli's reputed modernistic "Machiavellism" and "statism" in relation to that of Jean Bodin, Henry VIII and Giovann Botero. Historiographical aspects are addressed.
