Originally bred to hunt in packs, beagles today are more often raised as companion dogs known for their courage, stamina, intelligence, sense of fun, and easy-to-care-for coats. In 2005, they were America's fifth most popular breed, with more than 42,000 puppies registered by the American Kennel Club.
