Intellectual Activity and Intercultural Exchanges in Acre, 1191–1291
Omschrijving
"On May 18, 1291 Frankish Acre was taken by the Mamluks and destroyed, marking, as Prawer has written, the end of the history of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. As is well- known, during the preceding century Acre was a major urban centre, which served as the capital of the kingdom of Jerusalem and as a major commercial hub. But another important aspect of the thirteenth-century city remains unexplored: During that period Acre housed a considerable number of learned men, some of whom possessed knowledge that was unique and rare"- Jonathan Rubin explores the intellectual activities and intercultural exchanges that occurred in the city of Acre during the Crusades, drawing on the complete body of evidence from the city. The result is an unprecedentedly rich portrait of a hitherto neglected intellectual centre on the Eastern shores of the medieval Mediterranean.
