Dumont d'Urville (1790–1842) discovered new Antarctic territory and shed light on customs in Pacific islands during a three-year expedition begun in 1837. Volume 3 of d'Urville's narrative, published in 1842, examines traditions in Chile and on the island of Mangareva (French Polynesia).
