French explorer, botanist and ethnographer J. Dumont d'Urville (1790–1842) discovered new Antarctic territory and shed light on customs in Pacific islands during a three-year expedition begun in 1837. Volume 4 of his narrative, published in 1842, describes his discoveries about customs in many south-west Pacific islands.
