French explorer, botanist and ethnographer J. Dumont d'Urville (1790–1842) discovered new Antarctic territory and shed light on customs in Pacific islands during a three-year expedition begun in 1837. Volume 5, published in 1843, recounts the crew's adventures on small islands off Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Indonesia.
