Dumont d'Urville (1790–1842) discovered new Antarctic territory and shed light on customs in Pacific islands during a three-year expedition begun in 1837. Volume 6 of d'Urville's narrative, published in 1844, charts the physical features and traditions of several Indonesian provinces.
