This pioneering work by French orientalist Eugène Burnouf (1801–52) set a standard for European Buddhist studies and continues to shape the modern understanding of the religion and its philosophy. This second edition was published posthumously in 1876, with an introduction by French philosopher Jules Barthélemy Saint-Hilaire (1805–95).
