The book is meant for self revision on topics related to the heart and great vessels as well as the lungs and chest wall. Questions on the basic sciences include developmental abnormalities, normal anatomy and physiology, microbiology and pharmacology. Clinical questions include those related to managing conditions affecting the heart and lungs and mostly relate to the inter phase between medical and surgical management and their definitive surgical management.
The book gives insight into the way diseases of the heart, lung and chest wall are managed from a surgical perspective and may provide useful insight into the surgical management of these conditions to non-surgeon allied professional. It is certainly a useful study companion for the surgeon in training, especially those interested in cardiac or thoracic surgery. Whilst the specialist trainee in cardiothoracic surgery will be great beneficiary general trainees will find useful topics on which revision questions are based. The basic sciences section may even be useful for junior doctors and medical students.
The structure of the questions has been designed as mainly the multiple choice type as the author feels that they are more useful as an aide to revision. The last two chapters are in the form of 'Single Best Answer' type and 'Extended Matching Item' type questions for readers to familiarise themselves with these type of questions.
