Sam is a very large orange-and-white tabby whom Mom found at the local animal shelter. He has found his way into her heart, as well as her house. As much as she loves him, he makes her crazy with his cat ways-bringing in live things like rats, a snake, and a bat, as well as any number of birds. He also loves to eat and has put on several pounds since animal shelter days.
ENTER LILAH. Mom figures if Sam has a kitten to chase around, he will get more exercise and lose a little of that excess poundage. And so he does. And so goes the story.
