In Greek and Latin, tropes are generally defined as variations from a linguistic and stylistic norm, either for stylistic purposes or for necessity, and are in close proximity to what are commonly known as rhetorical figures. This book offers a critical edition of seven Greek treatises on tropes, based on the collation and on the study of 167 Greek mediaeval manuscripts. The introduction opens with an overview on the concept of trope, and provides the first comprehensive analysis of the Ancient and Byzantine grammatical tradition on tropes in Greek.
