When the climate goes feral

Coming of age in a tipping world

Omschrijving

When droughts and floods tear apart the fabric of society, it is only family and love that can offer cohesion to survive All the sawmill’s forest is lost in devastating fires. After years of drought, a period of torrential rain breaks out. The barren slopes no longer hold water, and a black tidal wave rages through the river valley. Eleven-year-old Mindra and her invalid grandmother are the last inhabitants of a village near the abandoned sawmill, high on the mountainside. She rescues some survivors, who become her new family. The world is tipping and they must make it on their own. Mindra is three years old when her parents leave the hamlet to go working in the city. They never came back. Mindra is raised by her grandmother and “Grova”, one of the last descendants of the Mountain People. Not long after the Great Drought began. Devastating forest fires destroyed the mountain woods year after year and nothing to stop them. The sawmill closed down: no more trees left. The cable car across the river is Mindra’s only access to the schoolbus and school. Her only perspective is learning, to become autonomous. When Mindra is eleven the drought is succeeded by torrential rains; a carbon black flood wave sweeps through the river valley, depopulating it completely. Only the island and shipyard withstand. Mindra rescues three adults and three children from the island, thanks to her ability how to operate the cable car and its auxiliary power plant. They become her new family, as Grova never returns and Grandmother dies. Mindra, her new sister and brothers have to grow up in a tipped over world. How will they cope with droughts and hurricanes to come?
